Ferric Chloride Comments/Information

FERRIC CHLORIDE 3.8%

A number of years ago, a writer in the Schoch Letter noted the possible tattooing effect of Monsel's solution, especially in cosmetically important areas, and suggested the use of Ferric Chloride solution as an alternative hemostatic, as Ferric Chloride is an entirely water soluble form of Ferric Chloride. The writer suggested a 3.8 Molar solution.

Over the next few issues of the Schoch Letter, there was an exchange of comments on Ferric Chloride, including the difficulty of getting it made and getting it made right. Included in this was the "correct" formula stated by the writer to be 3.8 x the molecular weight added to 1000 ml water. --- However, as you may recognize, this is the formula for a MOLAL solution, not MOLAR. Nevertheless, the writer indicated that the formula seemed to work satisfactory. (Molar- when enough water is added to make a total volume after solution of the ferric chloride of 1000 ml) ADDING 1000 ml produces a total volume of about 1400 ml.

Unsure what was really being used, (what strength), we prepare Ferric Chloride BOTH ways, 3.8 Molar and 3.8 Molal.

For comparison purposes, the weight/volume percentage of each is approximately:

3.8 Molal 37.5% w/v
3.8 Molar 61.6% w/v

We supply both in clear plastic bottles, with polyseal caps, 1 and 2 oz sizes. Ask about larger sizes. It is manufactured with a 3 year expiration date. Sales ratio of Molar to Molal is about 2:1.

If Ferric Chloride spills on clothing, and ordinary washing does not remove it, Delasco Iron Stain Remover will remove it safely from most materials.

Color is very dark rusty brown. Consistency is thin. Acidic odor.
