Monsels Comments/Information

Also called Ferric Subsulfate solution, and Ferric Sulfate (basic)

Used for years as a protein precipitate, or astringent, in sealing blood vessels in superficial wounds for hemostasis.

Monsels solution is composed of insoluble salts, and it has been reported that occasionally these salts are retained in a wound and can be seen from the surface as a kind of tattoo. It has been recommended that Monsel's not be used in cosmetically important areas.

It should not be used in any wound which is to be closed.

As Monsel's ages, it begins to form a precipitate. Many assume that the supernatent becomes less effective as the precipitate forms. Delasco does not recommend shaking this precipitate before use, but the precipitate can be forced into solution for short periods of time by heating the solution.

Delasco's Monsels supplier has been carefully chosen, so that a grade of Monsels is supplied which does not begin to form precipitate until about two years have passed. Delasco has evaluated and rejected suppliers in which massive precipitates have formed within just a few months.

Monsels will stain clothing if spilled on it. It can be removed in most instances with Delasco Iron Stain remover.

Monsels is available in 1 oz and 2 oz plastic bottles, and 16 oz glass bottles. If the cap develops scale, a combination of running water and mechanical removal will usually remove most of material and allow a tight closure.
