| Bengal Red Counterstain
Used with Swartz Lamkins stain. Swartz Lamkins stains hyphae
and spores a medium to dark blue. The background keratin forming
cells take up a light blue.
Some observers have expressed difficulty in differentiating
the blue stain of hyphae and spores from the background cells and
some artifacts.
After preparing a wet mount with Swartz Lamkin, one or two
drops of Bengal Red Counterstain is placed at the edge of the
coverslip, and allowed to infiltrate under the slip by capillary
action. This stain acts on the background, staining cells and
some artifacts red, but does not stain hyphae or spores, making
identification easier, especially in a specimen with only a
few hyphae.
Supplied in 1/2 and 1 oz plastic drop dispensing containers.
Keep in a dark place.
