Neonatal Usage Recommendations

No studies exist that discuss absorption of Mastisol and Detachol through neonatal skin. The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) did publish some guidelines that pertain to neonatal skin care. In their guidelines AWHONN states that because of premies' (less than 37 weeks gestational age) underdeveloped stratum corneum, they may be at a greater risk for absorption through the skin. For this reason, we do not promote Mastisol and Detachol on premature babies.

However, even though there is no clinical data on this population, many NICU's throughout the country use Mastisol and Detachol on their full-term neonates. In a study conducted by Dr. Valerie Lyon, entitled "Approach to procedures in neonates," Dr. Lyon discusses the use of Mastisol. She states, "Facial lesions are prone to incidental trauma in ambulatory toddlers. This cosmetically sensitive area requires more suture to decrease the chance of postoperative dehiscence. To address this situation, the author uses Benzoin or Mastisol to adhere the wound dressing in place and extra gauze for cushioning." (Dermatologic Therapy, Vol. 18, 2005, 117–123)
