An article in the American Medical Association's Archives of Dermatology entitled "Randomized Trial of Aromatherapy-Successful Treatment for Alopecia Areata" described treatment with this formulation in which 44% of the patients showed improvement. (Arch Dermatol. 1998;134:1349-52)
32% of these were described as "excellent improvement". 26% as "very good improvement", and 43% as "marked improvement" or "slight but definite improvement".
The control group (oil base but no essential oils) showed only a 15% improvement rate. The material was applied to the affected areas at bedtime, and massaged into the scalp for at least two minutes. Then a hot towel was wrapped around the head to facilitate absorption of the essential oils into the scalp.
