Primer Modified Unna Boot is a bandage of 100% cotton gauze evenly impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste. The bandage is rolled and packaged in an individual vacuum-seal pouch.
The Primer Unna Boot is used in ambulatory treatment of venous stasis leg ulcers. It is also used in the management of Lymphatic edema, sprains, strains, minor fractures and as a protective bandage for grafts on burn wounds.
Primer is wrapped around the lower leg starting at the toes and winding up the leg to just below the knee. At the heel and ankle, pleats or tucks folded into the gauze may improve the smoothness of the application. Some practitioners wind a figure-eight at the ankle as an alternative wrapping method.
Primer is made without preservatives. This is important because some people have allergic reactions to preservatives. These chemicals are not necessary in the Primer paste formulation because there is no gelatin. Since the gauze used in making Primer is all cotton, it absorbs the paste evenly.
In addition, it is woven with a selvage (finished edge) so stray threads do not endanger the wound.
