| Fischer Model MD-1 Galvanic Unit Description
The Fischer Galvanic Unit offers a modern and versatile approach to the use of Galvanic current (DC) in a variety of conditions. Highly filtered direct current is available in this extremely portable unit for use in anapboresis, cataphoresis, and iontophoresis applications.
Two meter scales (O to lO and O to 5O milliamperes)allow a direct reading of the actual current flow and the dual plug patient cordset allows easy reversal of current polarity.
Installation
Locate the unit near to the treatment table where all controls are easily accessible. Plug the line cord into a 115 volt, 60 cycle AC grounded wall receptacle (hospital grade preferred). DO NOT USE: Adapter / Adaptor plugs or two wire extension cords. Proper grounding of the unit is essential for safe and proper operation.
If your home or office is not equipped with wall sockets that accept 3-prong plugs, contact an electrician who can install the correct receptacles. Because of its light weight and small size, the MD-l is very portable. When relocating the unit for use, however, always be sure it is properly grounded.
Insert the dual-prong plug at one end of the patient cordset into the front panel jacks; the red jack is always positive with respect to the black (negative). The plugs at the opposite ends of each cord should be firmly plugged into the accessory electrodes to be used.
CAUTION! HIGH VOLTAGE
Hazardous Electrical Output. This equipment is for use only by qualified medical personnel. For electrical safety, prevent contact between the patient or electrodes and any metal objects or fixtures during treatment. Observe patient reaction to current at all times and adjust intensity carefully; current flow varies with the resistance of the patient circuit and is always indicated on the meter.
Panel Controls
The following section lists the panel controls along with a brief description of the function of each.
1) Power Switch: This turns power on and off to the MD-I. The red "ACTIVE" lamp will glow only when current is flowing in the patient circuit.
2) Intensity: This control varies the amount of current available at the output jacks. Always be sure the intensity control is set to "O" (zero output) before applying pads to the patient and before removing the pads.
3) Meter: Indicates the actual current flowing through the patient circuit. The meter scale is calibrated from 0-10 and 0-50 in two ranges for direct reading of output current in milliamperes. Actual current metered will depend upon the intensity setting and the patient resistance. No current can flow when the electrodes are not applied and there will be no meter deflection if the patient circuit is not completed.
4) Meter Scale Switch: Selects a "LOW" meter scale (O to lO ma) or a "HIGH" scale (0-50 ma). When set to the 0-10 scale, the meter will indicate current flow as read from the upper (0-10 ma) range. On this scale, currents in excess of lO milliamperes will fully deflect the meter and could damage the movement.
When the meter scale switch is set to the 0-50 scale, the meter uill indicate current as read from the lover (0-50 ma) range. Note that the meter scale switch does not alter the output current. but only changes the meter scale. Use the 0-50 scale when applying currents in excess of lO ma.
5) Output Jacks: The two jacks located on the front panel accept the patient cord plugs and are color coded: the RED jack is POSITIVE (+) and the BLACK is NEGATIVE (-).
Operation Procedure
Galvanic Application: Wet pad electrodes, carbon rollers, or water baths can be used for Galvanic treatment to ensure proper patient contact. Tap water (never purified or distilled water) is electrically conductive and is often used with water baths and to saturate wet pads for good electrical contact.
Galvanic current must never be completed through both patient and operator; it is completed only through the patient.
